SUCCESSFULLY LEADING IN BUSINESS – SPRINGBOARD WEEKLY

SUCCESSFULLY LEADING IN BUSINESS

A business is as good as its leader and leadership in business means having a vision, and the ability to put together teams and resources and get them to work for the betterment of the business. It means being able to sell a vision and rally people to want to achieve this vision with you, which involves identifying and leveraging on networks, learning, and always improving. Indeed, being a leader is not a title, it is showcased by actions and outcomes, motivation, and your ability to offer solutions and overcome challenges.

This thus begs the question who is a leader and is there a perfect leader?

Answers here point to the question are leaders born or made and while your environment and nurture may contribute you’re your leadership qualities; we are all born with innate leadership skills. In this regard, to be considered a leader, you must be ready to take up the responsibilities associated with it; shed your doubt and move away from your weaknesses and perceived inadequacy and develop yourself into a leader. The willingness to put yourself out there and learn from your experiences improves your chances of becoming a leader.

That we all have leadership in us does not mean we are perfect leaders; perfect leadership is a fallacy as we can only be good leaders in certain and limited situations and not all situations. This argument is based on the assumption that leadership and those who are led, live in a dynamic environment and with changing parameters the expectations of both parties are in constant motion and with it varying outcomes.

In this regard, every leader must be anchored in principles and values that pivot them even in changing environments; however this pivot is not cast in stone and without compromising their ethos, the leader must also be agile and adaptive to new realities and how to navigate these changes to achieving set out objectives.

Given that we have different types of leaders, your business will demand different leadership qualities as compared to a country. While the latter may be autocratic, benevolent, authoritative, or democratic, your business based on its nature will demand a different kind of leader. Autocratic and authoritative leaders may work in military settings but today’s business world is looking for visionary and motivational kind of leadership. For the business leader, your roles include sweating your assets and this can only be achieved through getting your staff to buy into your vision and working towards the end goal. Many companies have shown once employees feel that they are cared for they commit and go above and beyond to deliver for their organization.

In this regard, a good leader has to deploy and employ certain tools at his disposal including patience, listening, perception, emotional intelligence, motivation, and participation. These variables individually and collectively inform reasons to believe in a leader and the willingness to provide support for their leadership. Further, the business leader must be willing to empower and delegate; the misguided approaches many business leaders take to be one and all often lead to fatigue and burnout, dropping of balls, and inhibition of growth.

Thus to be a good leader for your business, you must understand your limitations as this informs the kind of team you build, the hires you are to hire and the authority you delegate for your vision to be realized. Knowing your limitations also directs you to the circles you will engage in, the kind of knowledge you will seek, and personal growth areas to work on and this may vary from anger management to communication, financial interpretation, and people skills.

To stay at the top of your game you must constantly work to improve yourself and this is where passion comes in; while money and other variables may motivate you, your passion, belief, and values will take you further and keep you grounded for the long run. Many good leaders understand leadership is not a privilege, rather it is a service that requires humility; so don’t see your role as a boss, rather see yourself as the fuel that drives the engine that makes your business succeed.
